The pages of history brim with great events, among them great milestones and celebrated achievements. We revel in the good, but our collective past is also defined by catastrophe. Disasters are the perfect example, and one such calamity that struck Mokena was the great fire of Sept. 23, 1956, that destroyed our community’s first modern supermarket, the Shopping Bag.
