Lincoln-Way East senior Taylor Nirchi goes up for ...
November 04, 2013
The Lincoln-Way East girls Volleyball team knew it had a daunting task Thursday, Oct. 31, in the Illinois High School Association Class 4A Marist Regional finals against host Marist.
An unexpected ankle injury to the Griffins' libero, Macie Lawrence, just before the match, however, made the task all the more difficult.
The RedHawks took advantage, defeating the Griffins 25-18, 25-14. They led early with an aggressive attack, including 15 kills in the first game.
Maddie Nirchi replaced the injured Lawrence at libero and did admirably, but the RedHawks' relentless aggressiveness allowed them to take advantage of Lawrence's absence.
"We knew we had to keep attacking even though their libero was out," Ann Marie Stifter said. "We knew we had to keep going at them."
The Griffins got to within 8-6 in Game 1, but the balanced attack from the RedHawks eventually took over. The RedHawks also limited East outside hitter Jessica Lindsey, who didn't have a kill in Game 1.
In the second set, the Griffins tied the match at 6-6, but the RedHawks responded with consecutive kills and didn't look back.
"They definitely focused on stopping me," Lindsey said. "I had a hard time getting solid hits over the net.
"But we had a great season, had a lot of fun and I am proud of what we accomplished."
The Griffins finished the year with a 22-15 record.
Josie Wierzal led the Griffins with six kills, while Maddie Nirchi had seven digs. Taylor Nirchi had 12 assists and three aces.
Two days earlier, in the regional semifinals, East got by Shepard 25-19, 25-22.
Lindsey had 13 kills and nine digs in that game, while Lawrence had 14 digs. Maddie Nirchi also recorded nine digs and nine service points.
