Despite its finish at the Illinois High School Association Class 2A Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional Monday, Oct. 14, the Lincoln-Way East girls Golf team capped a great team season by sending junior Kelly Sterling to state.
The Griffins, after winning a regional the previous week, placed fifth at the sectional, held at Coyote Run Golf Course in Flossmoor. East finished with a team score of 357. Hinsdale Central won with a 301, while Lyons took second with 318. Sandburg took the No. 3 spot with a 329.
The sectional medalist was Sandburg's Frankie Saban, a junior, who shot a 69. East's Sterling finished second with a 71.
"Monday was a bittersweet day for the Griffins," East coach Mary McGivern said. "Kelly Sterling continued her stellar play with an even-par-71, and she has great momentum heading into the IHSA State Tournament.
"After the regional championship, we were hopeful to make it as a team to state. But knowing that we were in a very strong sectional field, it was going to take our best team effort. Unfortunately, we fell a little short."
