This weekend, one headline in particular grabbed my attention: "Sales of pet costumes continue to climb."
It struck me as funny but also probably true.
After all, The Mokena Messenger itself has been encouraging the trend, inviting readers to submit photos of not only their scariest, most creative get-ups but also the holiday-appropriate attire of their four-legged friends.
And Mokena, you haven't disappointed.
I've received photos of pooches dressed as Elvis, Hawaiian hula dancers and other funny characters of all sorts.
A number of reader costumes have been pretty good, too. But really, the pets steal the show. We'll publish the best of the best in a soon-to-be-released issue.
I'm not sure when dressing up dogs started becoming more popular, but there seems to be no escaping the trend.
It's all over TV, and even my own family has gotten in on the act.
After speaking briefly with my folks, hearing about the more than 400 trick-or-treaters who stopped by for candy this year, my sister sent a picture text message.
Sure enough, our family dog was dressed as a glow-in-the-dark skeleton.
Given the photo's quality and dim lighting, it was hard to tell whether or not Stella was actually enjoying herself in her spooky threads, but my family sure seemed to be getting a kick out of it. For the record, I'm uncertain of whether my mom, dad or sister joined the pup in dressing up.
Just another way to get into the holiday spirit, I suppose.
So, Mokena, whether you're a grade-schooler eagerly anticipating a huge haul of sweets, a parent making sure your children don't eat too much candy or a dog dressed up as a skeleton, I hope you have a great time. Happy Halloween.
