For Wooden Paddle Pizza owner Jonathan Cowan, the true beauty to his Margherita pizza is its simplicity.
"The Margherita pizza is a beautiful thing, because it is so straightforward — so simple, yet so tasty," Cowan said.
It also has become one of the staples of his restaurant, which reopened recently at 11128 W. 179th St. in Orland Park under the new moniker.
The Margherita pizza — which can be made on wheat, white or gluten-free hand-stretched dough — is covered with a red tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese.
"We really wanted to set ourselves apart by using better products, and we've never had cherry tomatoes before," Cowan said. "The cheese is also a higher quality."
In particular, the cherry tomatoes add a juicy, fresh taste to every bite. But the ingredients aren't the only things to set apart Wooden Paddle Pizza.
"Another thing that sets it apart is our high heat oven," Cowan said. "With our style of dough, you get a nice crust, with nice coloring on the edges. It gives off a different taste than other pizzas around here. This isn't Chicago style pizza. This is sort of Neapolitan."
The result is a crispy, flavorful thin crust pizza that lives up to its description of being "so simple, yet so tasty."
"It's just a classically good pizza," Cowan said.
The pizza costs $6.65 for a 10-inch pizza; $10.05 for a 12-inch pizza; and $14.45 for a 14-inch pizza.
But for those looking for a few more options, Wooden Paddle Pizza also offers five sauces, five cheeses and more than two dozen toppings to choose from to create the perfect pizza.
